Background of the Study

Nursing ethics education plays a crucial role in shaping students' professional behavior and ensuring that they uphold ethical standards in clinical practice (Brown et al., 2023). Nursing professionals are often faced with ethical dilemmas that require sound judgment, critical thinking, and adherence to ethical principles such as beneficence, autonomy, and justice (Smith et al., 2024). Therefore, integrating ethics education into nursing curricula is essential for preparing students to navigate complex moral and ethical challenges in healthcare.

At the University of Ilorin College of Nursing, ethics education is incorporated into the nursing program to instill professional values and ethical reasoning among students. Studies have shown that nursing ethics education improves students' ability to recognize ethical issues, enhances their decision-making in clinical practice, and fosters professional integrity (Grant & Lumsden, 2023). Furthermore, ethics education helps nursing students develop interpersonal skills such as empathy, respect for patient rights, and accountability (Miller & Barker, 2024).

Despite the acknowledged importance of ethics education, there is ongoing debate about its effectiveness in influencing students' professional behavior. Some researchers argue that ethical knowledge does not always translate into ethical practice, as real-world clinical pressures can override theoretical learning (Adams & Stevenson, 2023). Additionally, differences in teaching methods, institutional policies, and student attitudes may affect the impact of ethics education on behavior (Taylor et al., 2024). Given these uncertainties, this study seeks to evaluate the effect of nursing ethics education on students' professional behavior at the University of Ilorin College of Nursing.

Statement of the Problem

Maintaining high ethical standards in nursing is essential for ensuring patient safety and trust in the healthcare system. However, reports of unethical practices such as patient neglect, confidentiality breaches, and professional misconduct raise concerns about the effectiveness of ethics education in nursing programs (Johnson & Harris, 2023). While nursing ethics is a core component of the curriculum, there is limited research on its actual influence on students’ professional behavior at the University of Ilorin College of Nursing.

Some students may view ethics courses as theoretical rather than practical, leading to a gap between ethical knowledge and real-world application. Additionally, ethical behavior can be influenced by factors beyond education, such as workplace culture, peer pressure, and institutional policies (Gonzales & Mackey, 2023). This study aims to examine the extent to which nursing ethics education impacts students' professional behavior and identify factors that may enhance or hinder its effectiveness.
